The walk back from the church was quiet, like all of ruined Midgar was holding its breath.

At the first explosion, Cloud jumped and grabbed for his sword as the sky lit up. The red and gold that followed shone in snowflakes in the sky, and he waited for the adrenaline to fade. A ridiculous show from a company that no longer existed. Fireworks. That meant he was late.

He ran down the dirt road to Seventh Heaven. Tifa was standing outside, her face covered in the harsh colors and fast shadows of the fireworks.

Cloud started to apologize, but she shook her head no. It was probably just a stray firework, but her face seemed to glow as she smiled. He turned to enjoy the rest of the lights, letting her press against him in the bitter air.

This year would be better. It had to be.
